Pirates’ award-winning pitching prospect could force an uncomfortable offseason decision

The Pittsburgh Pirates face a roster dilemma regarding right-handed pitching prospect Derek Diamond, who was named the organization's Kent Tekulve Reliever of the Year. Diamond finished the 2026 season with a 7-0 record, a 2.48 ERA, and 57 strikeouts across four minor league levels, including a strong stint with Triple-A Indianapolis. He is eligible for the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, requiring Pittsburgh to add him to their 40-man roster by November 17 to prevent him from being selected by another club.

Writer Emma Lingan argues that protecting Diamond is vital given Pittsburgh's ongoing bullpen struggles and blown saves in 2026. However, the decision is complicated by roster limits and other Rule 5-eligible prospects, such as Axiel Plaz and Jhonny Severino. Lingan contends that allowing another team to claim Diamond would be risky for general manager Ben Cherington after the franchise heavily invested in pitching development.
