Nathan MacKinnon’s clinical finish and Mackenzie Blackwood’s spectacular glove save highlight a physical opening frame in Denver, leaving the frustrated Flames trailing after a high-stakes first period.

The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2 at Ball Arena behind two goals from Artturi Lehkonen and four assists from Cale Makar. Nathan MacKinnon opened the scoring late in the first period before Martin Necas, Lehkonen, and Brock Nelson expanded the lead in the second period. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 25 saves to secure the win for Colorado.
Calgary countered with goals from Joel Farabee and Martin Pospisil, while Arsenii Sergeev stopped 29 shots. Colorado overcame an injury scare when Nelson returned to the bench for the third period after taking a puck to the ear, and Lehkonen sealed the win with his second goal shortly after Calgary cut the deficit to two.
