Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellan defended goaltender John Gibson after the team's 5-4 defeat against the St. Louis Blues. Despite Detroit limiting St. Louis to just 15 shots on goal, Gibson surrendered five goals. McLellan noted that Gibson had no chance on the first two goals before facing two laser shots from the hash marks and a tipped shot.
Author Todd Matthews highlighted that defensive breakdowns in 5-on-5 play were the primary issue for Detroit rather than goaltending. None of the five goals scored by the Blues came on power plays, as St. Louis capitalized on high-quality scoring chances to secure the comeback victory.
