Former NC State QB Philip Rivers has engaged in serious discussions about returning to coach his alma mater, though sources told ESPN that a deal isn't close.

Former NC State quarterback Philip Rivers is in serious discussions to become the next head coach at his alma mater, according to sources. Although Rivers has emerged as the favorite to replace the fired Dave Doeren, sources noted that a deal is not yet close and Rivers intends to finish his current high school coaching season at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama.
While Rivers has not yet met with school officials in person, discussions have included organizing a front office if he accepts the role. Rivers played 17 NFL seasons and set multiple NC State passing records from 2000 to 2003, and his son, Gunner, previously committed to play for the Wolfpack.
