Connor McDavid set an NHL record as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the New York Rangers 4-1 at Madison Square Garden. In his 15th game of the season, McDavid recorded an assist to become the fastest player in league history to reach 30 assists, surpassing Wayne Gretzky's 16-game mark set in 1984-85. McDavid also opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the contest.
Colton Dach added two goals for Edmonton, while Matt Tomkins stopped 27 of 28 shots in his first start for the franchise. Under head coach Mike Babcock, the Oilers limited the Rangers effectively, continuing a strong defensive stretch in which they allowed just one goal over a three-game span.
