FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing controversy following reports that FIFA paid nearly $4 million (approximately €3.6 million) to settle his personal tax obligations over three years. According to reports from The New York Times and Le Monde, the governing body covered Infantino's taxes across 2024, 2025, and 2026 under a tax equalization mechanism intended for US-based employees rather than elected officials.
The decision was reportedly introduced in 2024 by a restricted committee following input from Swiss lawyer Bruno Chiomento, though it was never formalized in official documents. Despite the emerging scrutiny, Infantino is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president at the upcoming election on March 18 in Vancouver, where he remains the only declared candidate.
