The OKC Thunder clearly had future savings on their mind when they declined Nikola Topic's fourth-year option.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have declined the fourth-year team option on point guard Nikola Topic for the 2027-28 season. According to The Athletic's Andrew Schlecht on the Game Theory Podcast, turning down the $7.48 million option is expected to save the franchise approximately $60 million in luxury taxes, as OKC currently projects over $25 million above the second apron threshold.
Mark Nilon of Thunderous Intentions suggests the 21-year-old guard could be an attractive trade candidate for other franchises, proposing a potential swap with the Phoenix Suns for wing Jordan Goodwin to help address Oklahoma City's depth issues.
