The SCAG Racing driver’s Funny Car had just exploded into a massive fireball during qualifying at the Mopar NHRA Las Vegas Nationals. Its body broke apart, flames rolled over the cockpit, and the car struck the guardwall. Yet Daniel Wilkerson…

SCAG Racing driver Daniel Wilkerson walked away without serious injuries after a violent engine explosion engulfed his Funny Car in flames at the Mopar NHRA Las Vegas Nationals. The incident occurred during qualifying on Saturday, October 31, alongside J.R. Todd. Wilkerson managed to steer away from Todd before clipping the guardwall, escaping with only singed firesuit sleeves despite severe cockpit heat.
The crash served as a real-world test for a new body-tether safety system approved for the 2026 season, co-developed by Tim Wilkerson and Murf McKinney. While the tethers caught the front of the body, the remaining explosive pressure shredded the middle section. Tim questioned the body's structural integrity, whereas Daniel was grateful the body separated, allowing intense heat to escape.
