FURY’S HUGE GAMBLE! Trainer Defends ‘Risky’ Fight That Could Wreck Joshua Showdown

Tyson Fury is rolling the dice on a mega-fight with Anthony Joshua by facing 46-year-old Mariusz Wach first. His trainer, SugarHill Steward, insists the risk is worth it to avoid ring rust.

Tyson Fury’s trainer, SugarHill Steward, is backing the fighter’s risky tune-up bout against Mariusz Wach on July 24. Steward insists Fury needs to stay active, dismissing fan concerns that the fight jeopardizes a massive future payday against Anthony Joshua.

Fury is putting it all on the line. The all-British clash with Joshua is one of the biggest fights left in boxing, but first, he must get past a veteran opponent. Steward says the decision is entirely Fury’s, driven by a simple need to compete after his last bout against Oleksandr Usyk. He made it clear that Fury calls the shots. “Pretty much it’s any fight Tyson wants to fight,” SugarHill said.

The core of the strategy is activity over preservation. Rather than sit on the sidelines waiting for the perfect moment, Fury wants to stay sharp. His trainer fully supports this mindset, arguing that a fighter has a right to fight. “He wants to stay busy. He should have that right to stay busy if it can be made happen. I mean, if it can be made to happen. So yeah, that’s where we are now.”

But critics argue the danger is too great. A bad cut or a shock defeat against Wach would instantly vaporize the nine-figure showdown with Joshua. Steward shot down that line of thinking immediately. He argues that danger is a constant companion in a boxer’s life, not something that only appears against elite opponents. “Jeopardy in every fight. Don’t even go there,” Steward warned.

He explained that a career-altering incident can happen at any time, even outside the ring. “There’s always jeopardy. It could be a bad cut. Anything could happen in that fight. You can get injured on the way to the fight, going to the ring, twist your ankle, break it or something. There’s just so many different options. It doesn’t even have to do with just fighting.”

Everything now hinges on the July 24th fight. If Fury emerges unscathed, the path is cleared for the long-awaited collision with Anthony Joshua later this year. A slip-up, however, would be a catastrophic blow to British boxing, proving the fans’ fears were justified all along. The stakes could not be higher.
