Detroit Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle has been voted the Tiger of the Year by the Detroit chapter of the BBWAA. The American League Rookie of the Year finalist earned 21 of 23 first-place votes following a historic debut campaign. He is only the third rookie to win the honor since the award was introduced in 1965, joining Mark Fidrych and Riley Greene.
McGonigle led the American League with 7.1 bWAR and led the Tigers in hits, runs, triples, walks, total bases, and stolen bases. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised the young star, noting the club plans to build around him, while president of baseball operations Scott Harris highlighted his all-around contributions and historic production.
