Liberty Will Not Retain Chris DeMarco As Head Coach After One Season

The New York Liberty will not retain head coach Chris DeMarco after just one season in charge. The decision prompts the franchise to search for its third head coach in three years following a 3-0 semifinal sweep by the Atlanta Dream. Although DeMarco expressed that he expected to return in 2027, key players Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones withheld clear endorsements after the playoff elimination.

New York finished the regular season with a 26-18 record, won the Commissioner’s Cup, and entered the playoffs as the No. 8 seed before upsetting the Minnesota Lynx in the first round. General manager Jonathan Kolb will now conduct his fourth coaching search, coming a year after the team dismissed Sandy Brondello following the 2025 campaign.
