Chelsea have entered the transfer race to sign Monza striker Gustavo Varela and sent scouts to watch the forward in action on Saturday. The 21-year-old Portugal U21 international scored his 11th goal in 20 appearances during Monza's 2-1 defeat to Bologna. Several European clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Atletico Madrid, are also closely monitoring the player.
Monza originally signed Varela from Benfica in July for a €2.5 million fee. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly seeks attacking reinforcements after summer signings Emmanuel Emegha and Danny Welbeck failed to convince, leading winger Pedro Neto to start up front against Manchester United.
