The Montreal Canadiens have been looking for a second-line center for quite some time, and it remains the team's biggest need.

The Montreal Canadiens have been linked by NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period to Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele. Pagnotta suggested that Scheifele could be a prime trade target for Montreal if the struggling Jets commit to a full-scale rebuild. Adding a second-line center has reportedly remained the Canadiens' top organizational priority.
Scheifele is currently in the third season of a seven-year, $59.5 million contract with Winnipeg. The article notes that while Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin was previously considered, he is unwilling to waive his no-trade clause for Montreal, making Scheifele an appealing alternative.
