Key Things to Know
  • Peter Windsor argued that starting on used soft tires, not Charles Leclerc, cost Lewis Hamilton the Mexican GP win.

  • Windsor stated that Hamilton's Q2 lock-up during qualifying forced him to burn a fresh set of soft tires.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Formula 1 insider Peter Windsor argued that Lewis Hamilton's Mexican Grand Prix loss was caused by starting on used soft tires rather than his clash with teammate Charles Leclerc. Hamilton started from pole position but lost out on the victory following an opening-lap battle with Leclerc and eventual winner Max Verstappen. Hamilton blamed Leclerc's off-track maneuver into turn four for costing him the race win.

Windsor explained that a Q2 lock-up forced Hamilton to use an extra set of new soft tires during qualifying. According to Windsor, starting on used tires left Hamilton vulnerable to Leclerc on the opening corners, which ultimately prevented him from controlling the race.
