The Buffalo Sabres suffered a loss to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night after blowing a shutout lead, heavily undermined by struggles at the faceoff dot. Buffalo won only 16 of 53 draws during the game as Ottawa outshot them 30 to 24. Senators centers Claude Giroux won 100 percent of his faceoffs, while Dylan Cozens and Tim Stutzle each recorded a 90.9 percent win rate.
Todd Matthews argues that Buffalo's chronic faceoff inefficiency poses a major obstacle to remaining competitive in the Atlantic Division. The Sabres rank 31st in the NHL with a 45.2 percent faceoff win rate, and Matthews contends that modest improvements on draws would generate more scoring chances and prevent opponents from stealing crucial points.
