The Buffalo Bills have released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson after just six games with the franchise. The decision followed a one-game suspension Gardner-Johnson received for spitting towards Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers in Week 6. NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe questioned whether the 28-year-old safety would get another opportunity in the NFL after playing for six teams across five years.
Wolfe reported that Gardner-Johnson's playmaking ability no longer outweighed defensive lapses and on-field reliability issues that frustrated Buffalo's coaching staff. Gardner-Johnson started six games for Buffalo, recording 26 tackles and an interception, before Damar Hamlin replaced him in the starting lineup during a 36-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.
