The Story in 60 Seconds

Kicker Charlie Smyth is set to take over starting kicking duties for the New Orleans Saints ahead of Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. Smyth's elevation from the practice squad follows the team releasing veteran kicker Daniel Carlson, who missed four of 12 field goals and two extra points across seven games. Head coach Kellen Moore cited consistency concerns as the reason for making the change.

Smyth originally joined the Saints in 2024 via the NFL's International Player Pathway Program after previously playing Gaelic football. During the 2025 campaign, he converted 12 of 16 field goal attempts. Special teams coordinator Phil Galiano worked with Smyth on correcting his foot alignment to eliminate past issues from the left hash.
