The New York Giants released backup quarterback Jake Haener on Thursday and held workouts for four veteran free agents. Haener had been serving as the team's third quarterback behind starter J.J. McCarthy and backup Jameis Winston. The transaction clears a 53-man roster spot, and Haener is reportedly likely to be re-signed to the Giants' practice squad.
The roster opening may be utilized for running back Eric Gray or wide receiver Jalin Hyatt after return specialist Charlie Jones suffered a hand injury. The four free agents brought in for workouts were wide receiver/kick returner Steven Sims, wide receiver/kick returner Maurice Alexander, wide receiver River Cracraft, and punter Wes Pahl.
