A number of high-profile players including Leah Williamson and Beth Mead have ruptured their ACLs in recent years…

The Football Association and the Women's Super League have launched a new research project to investigate anterior cruciate ligament injuries in women's football. The study aims to uncover why ACL tears occur so frequently and explore ways to reduce incidence rates following major injuries to stars like Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, Alexia Putellas, Sam Kerr, and Vivianne Miedema.
Conducted in collaboration with Imperial College London and knee surgeon Simon Ball, the FA-sponsored PhD research will be led by Hanna Lehtovirta. Every club in the WSL and WSL2 will be invited to participate, with researchers combining scientific data and player interviews to compare footballers who have suffered ACL injuries against those who have not.
