The Miami Heat were expected to be one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. However, they have struggled.

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra called out his team's defensive performance after a difficult 3-6 start to the season. Despite high expectations following the pairing of Giannis Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo, Miami has registered the fifth-worst defensive rating in the NBA. Spoelstra stressed that strong resumes mean nothing without execution, noting that collective effort and communication must replace talk.
Author Ryan Stano notes that the Heat have already fallen to 10th place in a competitive Eastern Conference despite staying healthy. He warns that Miami risks dropping further behind injured teams like the Pacers and Magic if defensive adjustments are not made quickly.
