EXCLUSIVE: Paul Stewart bravely described his ordeal as a child for the first time in our 2016 story. Paul and victims of the football abuse scandal are to be recognised by the FA next week.

Former England midfielder Paul Stewart has detailed his continuing efforts to combat child abuse across sports a decade after first revealing his childhood ordeal. Stewart, who previously played for Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Manchester City, has dedicated his post-playing career to safeguarding youngsters. The Football Association is set to recognize Stewart and fellow victims of the historical abuse scandal as guests of honor at England's upcoming match against Croatia.
Stewart suffered abuse from youth coach Frank Roper, who died in 2005 without facing justice. Stewart has since founded a safeguarding union, created educational courses alongside sports figures including Gary Lineker, and received the Sir Bobby Charlton Award from the FA. His work follows the 2021 Sheldon report, which found the FA previously failed to properly protect young players.
