The Maple Leafs rallied in the third but it wasn’t enough to overcome an early deficit against the Canadiens.

The Toronto Maple Leafs fell 4-2 to the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday, largely undone by costly defensive-zone turnovers. Rookie Gavin McKenna committed two giveaways that resulted in Montreal goals, including Alex Newhook's opening tally and Chris Kreider's breakaway score. Newhook also netted a second goal off a Brandon Duhaime turnover, while Jacob Fowler earned the win in net for the Canadiens over Sergei Bobrovsky.
Toronto captain John Tavares returned to the lineup after missing nine games with a lower-body injury, but defenseman Morgan Rielly exited in the second period due to a non-contact lower-body injury. Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller noted that losing Rielly is a significant blow. The defeat drops Toronto to an 8-8-2 record on the season and 0-3-1 against Atlantic Division opponents.
