Unified super-welterweight champion Jaron Ennis has identified WBC title-holder Sebastian Fundora as the opponent who can cement his status at the top of the division. Ennis, who holds the WBO and WBA belts, is pursuing a three-belt unification.
The 29-year-old secured his unified champion status last month with a sixth-round stoppage of Xander Zayas. Now, he is looking for his next high-profile contest and has made his intentions clear regarding the unusually tall Fundora, who stands at 6ft 6in.
Despite facing a potential eight-inch height disadvantage, Ennis expressed total confidence in his ability to overcome the challenge. Speaking on The Pivot Podcast, he was direct in his call-out.
“I want him [Fundora]. I want him. I don’t care [that he’s 6ft 6in]. Bring him on, you’re going to see I’m really different. These guys don’t do what I do. Y’all [will] see as I keep going up and keep fighting these different guys, I’m going to keep getting better and better.”
This statement underscores Ennis’s belief that his technical skills and adaptability are more than enough to neutralise the significant physical advantages Fundora brings to the ring. A fight between the two would present a classic stylistic puzzle, pitting Ennis’s all-round ability against Fundora’s unique dimensions.
However, a bout with Fundora is not imminent. The WBC champion, who is coming off a victory over Keith Thurman, is scheduled to defend his title against mandatory challenger Ermal Hadribeaj later this year. This commitment makes an immediate showdown with Ennis unlikely.
A more probable route for Ennis’s next fight involves the IBF title. The current champion, Josh Kelly, is set to defend his belt against unbeaten contender Caoimhin Agyarko on 25 July. Ennis will likely be a keen observer of that contest, as the winner would present a clear and available opponent for another unification match.
