Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Golden Boy Promotions have resolved their legal dispute, ending the litigation that had created uncertainty around the unbeaten contender’s promotional future. The settlement, which also includes Ortiz’s manager Rick Mirigian, allows all parties to move forward together.
Golden Boy chairman Oscar De La Hoya confirmed the agreement and the continuation of their partnership. “Our relationship with Vergil has spanned more than a decade, and we are proud to have played a role in his development into one of the sport’s premier fighters.” The resolution removes a significant legal hurdle that threatened to keep Ortiz out of the ring and complicate fight negotiations. Attention now returns to his career progression.
Ortiz Jr. expressed his relief and immediately targeted a major fight at 154 pounds. “I’m very grateful that Golden Boy and I were able to come to an understanding and resolve everything. I’m excited to move forward and make the biggest fights happen, including the Ennis fight. My only focus is on delivering unforgettable fights for the fans, and I know my team and I will accomplish that together.”
Despite Ortiz’s statement, a fight with Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis may be more difficult to make now than before the dispute. During the legal proceedings, Ennis has captured the WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles. His stated goal is to become the undisputed champion of the division. This makes fights against the other full titleholders, IBF champion Josh Kelly and WBC champion Sebastian Fundora, more strategically important for him.
Ortiz currently holds only the interim WBC title. While the legal issues are settled, his position as an interim champion places him lower in the queue for a fighter like Ennis, who is focused on unifying all the major belts. The path forward for Ortiz is clear of lawsuits, but the route to the top of the division remains challenging.
