Mike McCallum retained his WBA junior middleweight title on July 18, 1987, by knocking out Donald Curry with a single left hook. The stunning fifth-round finish came after Curry had controlled the fight, cementing McCallum’s legacy and altering Curry’s career trajectory.
Their championship bout at Caesars Palace was a significant event. McCallum, nicknamed “The Body Snatcher,” was the defending champion making his sixth title defense. Still, he entered as a 2-1 underdog. The favourite was Donald Curry, the former undisputed welterweight champion seeking to reestablish himself after a devastating loss to Lloyd Honeyghan. For four rounds, the odds held true. Curry’s superior hand speed and effective jab allowed him to build a comfortable lead on all three judges’ scorecards. He controlled the pace and even buckled McCallum’s knees with a right hand in the second round, leaving the champion looking a step behind.
The fight ended instantly in the fifth round. As Curry stepped forward to throw a right hand to the body, McCallum anticipated the move. He countered with a short, powerful left hook that landed precisely on Curry’s jaw. Curry collapsed to the canvas and was counted out by referee Richard Steele, bringing a sudden and conclusive end to the contest at 1:14 of the round. The finish earned Knockout of the Year honours and is remembered as one of the great one-punch knockouts in the sport’s history.
