On July 21, 1989, Mike Tyson secured his final successful defense of the undisputed heavyweight championship, stopping Carl Williams in just 93 seconds. The controversial first-round stoppage preserved Tyson’s formidable reputation before his historic upset loss to Buster Douglas seven months later.
Entering the bout, Tyson held the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles, making him the division’s unified and undisputed champion. His opponent, Carl Williams, was the IBF’s number one contender and had earned his shot with victories over established heavyweights like Trevor Berbick. Williams brought a significant height and reach advantage, and his strategy was to use his jab to keep the relentless champion at a distance.
From the opening bell, Williams attempted to establish his jab while tying Tyson up in the clinch whenever he closed range. Tyson, however, continued his trademark forward pressure, slipping punches while searching for an opportunity to land a significant blow. That opening appeared just over a minute into the round. As Williams threw another jab, Tyson moved outside it and delivered a powerful left hook that connected squarely on Williams’ jaw, sending the challenger down to the canvas.
Williams managed to beat referee Randy Neumann’s count, but he appeared unsteady on his feet. After briefly assessing the challenger, Neumann waved the fight off at the 1:33 mark, drawing boos from the crowd. Williams immediately protested the decision, insisting he was fit to continue, but the stoppage stood. The victory was one of the quickest in heavyweight title history and extended Tyson’s reign.
