Lightweight contender Ernesto Mercado claims light welterweight champion Shakur Stevenson blocked him on social media, viewing the action as evidence that Stevenson is avoiding a potential bout. Mercado insists his 19-fight record and amateur career make him ready for the challenge.
Speaking on the Inside Ring Show, Mercado addressed the online situation when questioned about his standing with the light welterweight champion.
Mercado said: ““I got no comment on that. He blocked me. So, I’m going to leave it at that. I’m in his head. I live in his head. He don’t want to fight me,””
The conversation turned to tactical approaches against one of boxing’s most accomplished defensive boxers. Former NFL running back LeSean McCoy questioned how Mercado would solve Stevenson’s lateral movement and ability to remain out of striking range. Mercado explained that while catching a mobile opponent requires patience, his plan centers on cutting off space and applying sustained pressure to break down his rival over several rounds.
Mercado said: ““For sure, I win. It might take me a couple of more rounds to get to him because he’s going to move. I’m not worried about that,””
When analyst Max Kellerman asked why Mercado felt so certain of success, the fighter credited his overall skillset and punching power rather than targeting specific flaws in Stevenson.
Mercado said: ““I just believe in the skills I got and the power I got. I don’t believe he’ll be able to withstand all that. I really don’t,””
Kellerman also raised questions regarding Mercado’s limited professional experience compared to Stevenson. Mercado rejected the argument, pointing to his extensive amateur background alongside his 19 professional contests.
Mercado said: ““Well, a lack of experience as a pro from a round standpoint, but I have deep amateur experience as well as pro. I still have 19 fights. I just make it look easy. So you can’t really discredit me for lack of experience,””
Mercado remains determined to prove his standing at the elite level. While Stevenson has yet to respond publicly to the claims, Mercado continues to build his case for a title opportunity in the light welterweight division.
