Lamont Roach will challenge William Zepeda for the vacant WBC lightweight title in Las Vegas on August 1. Roach plans to target Zepeda’s defense and punch resistance, though Zepeda’s relentless body attack poses a significant threat to his tactical movement.
Roach enters the contest confident that his own power and ring experience will prove decisive against the Mexican contender. Having previously completed 12 rounds against Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz without being stopped, the American believes Zepeda can be hurt with clean counters from the outside. Speaking ahead of the bout, Roach offered an unfiltered assessment of his opponent’s durability. “I think his punch resistance is moderate, but I don’t think he’ll be able to withstand what I got for 12 rounds,” Roach said. “We’re training for it, but I really don’t think he can take a lot of clean punches. I’m throwing fastballs with some heat on them.”
However, Zepeda presents a distinct tactical threat compared to Roach’s previous opposition.
While fighters such as Cruz and Davis focus heavily on head shots, Zepeda operates behind a high volume of work targeted directly at the midsection. The Mexican pressure fighter chips away from the opening bell, using relentless body work to slow down mobile opposition. As the rounds build up, those early midsection punches weaken defensive discipline and open up opportunities upstairs. Roach also identified defensive vulnerabilities in Zepeda’s guard during his fight preparations. “Defense, it’s a little shaky, but that’s what we’re going to exploit.”
The outcome in Las Vegas will depend on whether Roach can maintain his footwork and sharp counterpunching before Zepeda’s body attack takes effect. Sharp counters from distance may expose Zepeda early, but maintaining that rhythm becomes increasingly difficult once heavy body shots land. If Zepeda succeeds in forcing his preferred pace, punch resistance becomes secondary to pure physical endurance.
