Leicester City face an urgent race against time to recruit a clinical centre-forward before their League One campaign begins. Manager Russell Martin is targeting immediate promotion, but financial constraints and pending player departures leave the squad short.
With just over two weeks remaining until the season kicks off, major squad turnover is underway at Seagrave. Conor Chaplin, Alex McCarthy, and loan signing Christian McFarlane have arrived, while Swansea forward Liam Cullen closes in on a £2 million transfer. Meanwhile, established names including Harry Winks, Jannik Vestergaard, Victor Kristiansen, Patson Daka, and Jordan Ayew have already departed. Further exits loom, as Wout Faes, Harry Souttar, Ben Nelson, Caleb Okoli, and Oliver Skipp draw interest.
Financial realities following relegation have squeezed recruitment efforts under new Sporting Director James McCarron, particularly with King Power reportedly placing the club on the market. Despite these headwinds, Martin remains direct about his objectives for the campaign.
He declared: “Success means that we’re in the Championship next summer,” before adding, “That’s it. Then we can talk about anything else after that.”
The priority remains a proven, 20-goal centre-forward to lead the attack. While young striker Kirsten Otchere impressed during pre-season and Leyton Orient loanee Dom Ballard offers an option, Martin requires a headline goalscorer to convert chances consistently. Leicester also need reinforcement on the flanks to push Stephy Mavididi and Will Alves, alongside defensive cover before expected departures materialize.
Martin remains resolute about meeting the challenge head-on.
He stated: “We’ve not played one league game yet, but I’m confident that we’ll have a process, a game model and a squad capability that means we can achieve that. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here. If I didn’t think we could achieve that, I wouldn’t be here.”
He added: “So I’m really excited about it. I’m really hopeful. We’re going to have to have real humility because it’s going to be really tough. It’s not going to be easy. It’s never going to be easy. It’s an exciting challenge.”
Addressing the missing piece up front will ultimately define whether Leicester achieve their promotion mandate.
