Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela is searching for his next high-profile opponent after knocking out Edwin De Los Santos in the opening round of their lightweight rematch. Despite targeting Shakur Stevenson, Valenzuela faces reluctance from rival contenders who are wary of his power.
Valenzuela’s standing within the lightweight division has climbed sharply following his quick stoppage of De Los Santos. The victory effectively erased the memory of their first encounter, where Valenzuela was stopped after taking the bout on short notice. The contrast in performances was clear, given that Stevenson previously needed a hard-fought twelve-round decision to defeat De Los Santos.
However, securing a world title opportunity or marquee contest remains a challenge. Stevenson expressed minimal interest in accepting a bout against Valenzuela, forcing the lightweight to look elsewhere. Valenzuela believes his explosive punch power creates an unappealing proposal for top-tier opponents, who face high risk without guaranteed financial incentive.
Addressing his situation during an appearance on Inside the Ring, Valenzuela reflected on the difficulty of locking in high-stakes matches:
“I mean, I just keep going through the roster they put in and the guys they put in front of me. I’m scared none of these guys are going to want to call my name. I think I’m a nightmare for all these guys. So, I just pray and hope that I get big fights,”
Other options within the weight class remain open. Valenzuela has expressed interest in fighting Raymond Muratalla or the winner of the upcoming bout between William Zepeda and Lamont Roach Jr. For any opponent, facing Valenzuela carries significant danger. His ability to alter a bout with one clean left hand means opponents have a much smaller margin for error over twelve rounds compared to fights against other contenders.
When asked what will be required to finally land the division’s biggest fights, Valenzuela maintained a straightforward outlook:
“If the opportunity presents itself, I’ll be ready,”
He reiterated his desire to pursue the largest possible fights available, regardless of who stands in the opposite corner. Whether the division’s top names accept the challenge remains the central question.
