Light welterweight contender Ernesto Mercado is targeting a mandatory position to force world title opportunities after potential fights against Frank Martin and Arnold Barboza Jr failed to materialize. He returns on 15 August against veteran Emanuel Tagoe.
Mercado has expressed frustration at seeing prospective bouts evaporate despite his willingness to fight the division’s top names. Speaking to Fighthype, he addressed the stalled negotiations involving rival contenders:
“Itโs definitely frustrating. Especially a lot of these guys. Frank Martin, we were supposed to be fighting. I got guys like Barbosa too that I was supposed to fight way back when. They kind of pump-faked me a little bit,”
Rather than relying on verbal exchanges, the unbeaten light welterweight is focusing his efforts on pushing up the sanctioning body lists to secure leverage that voluntary challengers lack.
“But seeing myself get higher in the rankings, Iโm four now, five in the WBO and IBF. Itโs a little bit encouraging because once I hit that mandatory spot, theyโre either going to have to vacate or fight me. In that sense, Iโm happy where Iโm at.”
His next opportunity comes on 15 August against former world title challenger Emanuel Tagoe. The 37-year-old Ghanaian offers seasoned opposition, but Mercado expects his technical precision and ring craft to prove decisive.
“I think Tagoe knows that I punch just like Ryan Garcia does. But I do a lot of things way better than Ryan Garcia. I cut off the ring well. I bring solid boxing fundamentals, and my power sits a level above Ryan Garcia,”
Mercado expects a short night in the ring.
“Weโre going to test it on fight night, and I donโt think Tagoe makes it out. Iโll give him the benefit of the doubt. Iโll give him five rounds.”
A decisive performance would strengthen Mercado’s position near the top of the rankings, even if a win does not grant mandatory status immediately. By maintaining his momentum, he aims to narrow the gap on the division’s titleholders and ensure a championship fight cannot be avoided.
