Mike Tyson became the youngest undisputed heavyweight champion in boxing history after defeating Tony Tucker by unanimous decision in Las Vegas. Tyson added Tucker’s IBF belt to his WBA and WBC titles, securing full unification of the division.
The unification bout took place on August 1, 1987, at the Las Vegas Hilton in Paradise, Nevada, in front of 7,419 fans. Billed as The Ultimate, the clash formed the finale of HBO’s Heavyweight World Series. Both champions weighed exactly 221 pounds. Referee Mills Lane officiated the contest, which was the first heavyweight championship fight scheduled for 12 rounds after the WBC reduced title fights from the traditional 15-round distance.
Many spectators expected another early stoppage from Tyson, who brought a 30-0 record with 27 knockouts into the ring. However, Tucker entered at 34-0 with 29 knockouts and possessed a six-foot-five frame that presented serious tactical challenges. Tucker used his height, long jab, and disciplined footwork to disrupt Tyson early. Late in the first round, Tucker landed a sharp left uppercut that stunned Tyson, and he continued to tie up the champion inside during the third round.
Tyson gradually took control through patience rather than recklessly chasing a knockout.
The WBA and WBC champion worked behind his jab and systematically punished Tucker’s body whenever openings appeared. Tucker’s punch volume dropped noticeably over the second half of the fight. He later explained that a pre-existing right-hand injury worsened early in the contest, forcing him to rely on clinching, movement, and occasional showboating. Tyson kept up relentless pressure without yielding momentum. CompuBox recorded Tyson landing 216 of 412 punches to Tucker’s 174 of 452. The judges scored the bout 119-111, 118-113, and 116-112.
Leaving Las Vegas with the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles made the 21-year-old Tyson the undisputed king of the division. The victory established the foundation for his next milestone less than a year later, when he knocked out Michael Spinks in 91 seconds to secure the lineal heavyweight championship.
