Former world cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew claims Britain has produced only two elite-level boxers in modern history: Lennox Lewis and Joe Calzaghe. Bellew believes winning world titles alone is insufficient to reach the highest tier of international boxing.
Bellew outlined the clear distinction between holding a major championship and cementing elite status. While winning a major belt demonstrates world-class skill, he emphasized that true elite status requires consistently proving oneself against top-tier opposition over an extended period. To illustrate his point, Bellew named Terence Crawford, Oleksandr Usyk, and Canelo Alvarez as recent examples of elite operators in the sport.
Evaluating Britain’s rich boxing history against those strict parameters, Bellew concluded that only two domestic champions qualify for the exclusive tier.
“There’s world-class fighters and then there’s elite-level fighters. There’s very few elite-level fighters. I think this country’s produced two in Calzaghe and Lennox Lewis.”
Both Hall of Fame inductees built exceptional records on the international stage. Lewis secured his status by becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion in 1999, ultimately defeating every man he fought in his professional career. Calzaghe finished his career completely undefeated, setting a division record with 21 consecutive successful title defences at super-middleweight.
Former featherweight champion Prince Naseem Hamed also compiled a dominant title reign, making 15 consecutive defences. Yet Bellew feels Hamed fell just short of true elite status due to the overall strength of his resume.
“Naseem Hamed is possibly [elite-level], but his resume doesn’t really stack up. I’m talking elite-level fighters – fighters who’ve got the chin, who can adapt in fights.”
Bellew’s assessment highlights the high bar required for British boxers to earn permanent recognition among the sport’s ultimate icons. Winning major belts proves world-class talent, but achieving elite status demands durability, tactical flexibility, and victories over top-tier opponents. For active British titleholders, Bellew’s comments underline the precise standard needed to join Lewis and Calzaghe in boxing history.
