Jaron Ennis faces a prolonged wait in his bid to become undisputed junior middleweight champion after capturing the WBA and WBO titles against Xander Zayas. With division rivals tied up or recovering, his unification plans remain temporarily on hold.
The Philadelphia fighter cleared a significant hurdle by stopping Zayas to claim two world titles at 154 pounds. However, securing the remaining two belts requires navigating schedule conflicts and injury delays across the division. Ennis made his objectives clear immediately after his recent victory, directing a warning toward WBC champion Sebastian Fundora and IBF titleholder Josh Kelly.
Addressing the champions, Ennis stated: “My message to them is keep my belt warm for right now cuz I will be coming to collect them very soon,”
Fundora is unavailable for an immediate fight. He is scheduled to defend his WBC belt against Ermal Hadribeaj on 17 October, temporarily removing him from unification options.
That schedule leaves Kelly as the only practical opponent for a unification bout before the end of 2026. However, the British fighter suffered facial injuries during his own recent title defense. Kelly’s recovery timeline will dictate when he can return to training camp, creating further uncertainty for Ennis. Should Kelly require extended time to heal, Ennis may be forced to accept a non-title contest to avoid a long period of inactivity.
Despite the delays, Ennis maintains that his focus is entirely on collecting every title in the division rather than targeting a specific fighter.
“Whoever, whatever belt comes first, whoever is willing to step in the ring with me and take that risk, their belt will be coming back to Philadelphia with me,” Ennis said.
If Kelly cannot return before the end of the year, Ennis must decide whether to stay active against unranked contenders or wait until early 2027 for a unification match. With Fundora booked for October and Kelly sidelined, the road to undisputed status relies as much on timing as ring performance.
