Moses Itauma will face Filip Hrgovic for the vacant IBF heavyweight championship in the biggest test of his professional career. The unbeaten 21-year-old British contender steps up following seven consecutive stoppage victories, aiming to claim his first world title.
Itauma has swept through his recent division rivals with rapid knockout finishes, rarely needing to box past the early rounds. However, Hrgovic represents a far more formidable challenge. The durable Croatian possesses the solid chin, high-level punch resistance, and professional experience required to drag the young power-puncher into uncomfortable territory.
Former world champion Duke McKenzie expects a stern examination for the British heavyweight. Speaking to talkSPORT Boxing, McKenzie said: “We’re going to find out just how good Moses Itauma is. I don’t think Moses will go out there and wipe this guy out just like that. Two, three, four rounds. Can’t see it happening because this is for the vacant heavyweight championship of the world,”
McKenzie believes Hrgovic’s resilience could force Itauma to adjust his strategy if his explosive start does not produce an early stoppage. He added: “As you know, Hrgovic takes a shot. If he can get over them early rounds and get Itauma into fours and fives and sixes and later on into that fight, we’re going to find out a lot about Moses in this fight.”
Until now, no opponent has managed to test Itauma’s gas tank or composure over twelve rounds.
Should Hrgovic weather the initial storm, the fight will hinge on tactical adaptability and physical endurance. Itauma will be forced to control the distance with his jab, conserve energy, and box effectively while under pressure. McKenzie highlighted the key attributes the youngster must prove if the bout extends into the second half.
“He may have to dig deep. He may have to show some character, and that’s what we haven’t seen so far. He also might have to show that engine,” McKenzie stated.
“He might have to go into the last round. One thing you can say about Filip Hrgovic is he’s durable. He’s tough. If the cuts hold up from Filip Hrgovic, he has the durability to take Moses into those later rounds, and then it becomes interesting.”
A win captures the vacant world title and establishes Itauma at the top of the IBF heavyweight division. Proving he can endure a gruelling twelve-round fight would answer the biggest lingering question about his elite credentials.
