Top Rank faces a strategic decision over whether to move super featherweight titleholder Emanuel Navarrete back up to lightweight to face newly crowned WBC champion William Zepeda. The prospective matchup presents significant risk following Navarrete’s previous loss at 135 pounds.
Zepeda claimed the vacant WBC lightweight belt after defeating Lamont Roach by unanimous decision. Across 12 rounds, Zepeda maintained a relentless pace, throwing 884 punches and landing 218 to keep Roach pinned back throughout the contest. That sustained work rate poses a severe physical challenge for anyone in the division.
Navarrete previously stepped up to lightweight in May 2024, dropping a split decision to Denys Berinchyk for the WBO belt. The Mexican fighter struggled to establish his rhythm against Berinchyk, looking far less effective than during his championship reigns at 122, 126, and 130 pounds. While Navarrete never shies away from trading punches, engaging in a physical contest with a naturally larger pressure fighter like Zepeda favors the lightweight champion.
Former undisputed champion Terence Crawford highlighted the violent nature of the proposed clash during a post-fight broadcast on DAZN and TNT.
“Man, that’s CTE at its finest. It’s a bloodbath waiting [to happen]” Crawford stated.
Crawford’s assessment underlines the severe physical toll such an encounter could inflict, particularly on Navarrete as he attempts to jump weight classes again.
Top Rank possesses safer alternatives that avoid putting Navarrete in immediate danger. Navarrete currently holds the IBF and WBO titles at 130 pounds. A unification fight against WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster remains an attractive and logical path.
Furthermore, Top Rank can address the lightweight division through WBO champion Abdullah Mason. Mason sat ringside for Zepeda’s victory over Roach and provides a natural unification opponent at 135 pounds, removing any need to push Navarrete back into a higher weight class.
