Cuban heavyweight prospect Dainier Pero retained his WBA Continental United States title by stopping Aleem Whitfield in the third round on Saturday night in Orlando, Florida. The 26-year-old southpaw moved to 14-0 as the referee halted the scheduled ten-round contest after three dominant rounds.
Fighting at the Caribe Royale Resort, Pero took immediate control of the bout from the opening bell. The 6ft 5in southpaw established his mid-range positioning behind a firm jab, effectively neutralizing Whitfield and preventing him from generating any meaningful offensive work. Whenever Whitfield attempted to work his way inside, Pero adjusted by landing hard, clean shots to the body.
The physical disparity between the two fighters grew clearer as the bout progressed. Whitfield struggled continuously to negotiate Pero’s superior reach, while the unbeaten Cuban remained comfortable controlling both distance and tempo.
By the third round, the accumulated body and head shots had taken a significant toll on Whitfield. Pero maintained his output with precise punches while Whitfield offered very little in return, forcing the referee to intervene and bring the contest to an end.
The stoppage secured another early finish for Pero, improving his professional record to 14 victories with 11 knockouts. A former Pan American Games gold medalist and Olympic competitor, the 26-year-old has been brought along steadily since making his professional debut in 2022.
While Whitfield provided another practical learning exercise, the bout offered few answers regarding how Pero might handle stronger, more aggressive opposition. Having established that he is operating above developmental level, the Cuban champion now requires fights against serious heavyweight contenders to determine his actual standing in the division.
