Tamm Thibeault captured the IBF and WBO middleweight titles with a unanimous decision victory over Desley Robinson on Saturday. Now 5-0 as a professional, the 29-year-old former world amateur champion is positioned for an immediate contest against undisputed benchmark Claressa Shields.
Thibeault earned a 100-90 shutout on all three scorecards against Robinson. The bout marked her first distance test over 10 full rounds. During the contest, the Canadian managed a cut sustained from an accidental head clash while maintaining control over the ring rhythm. Her southpaw stance, leverage, and range management nullified Robinson completely across 10 rounds of action.
Although her professional record lists only five appearances, that figure obscures her true development. Thibeault is a two-time Olympian and a former world amateur champion. Her foundation inside the ring exceeds her brief professional tenure, giving her the physical and tactical tools to compete at the summit of women’s boxing.
Delaying a matchup with Shields to accumulate experience against lesser middleweights carries significant downside.
The middleweight division lacks depth below the absolute top tier. Building her record against lower-ranked contenders over the next two or three years would leave Thibeault fighting Shields at age 31 or 32. Crucially, intermediate opposition cannot replicate the hand speed, defensive reflexes, or real-time tactical adjustments that Shields presents.
Shields has dominated her division without facing an elite threat since defeating Savannah Marshall in 2022. While Shields remains the favored fighter in any prospective meeting, Thibeault possesses the physical framework, amateur background, and power required to pose a genuine challenge. Securing the bout sooner rather than later offers Thibeault her strongest competitive window.
