Shakur Stevenson has indicated that an upcoming fight date will soon be announced following the breakdown of talks with Devin Haney. Discussions collapsed over Stevenson’s catchweight demand, shifting focus back to potential WBO light welterweight title defenses.
The negotiations with WBO welterweight champion Haney ended after Stevenson held firm on a 144-pound catchweight requirement. Under those proposed terms, Stevenson would have moved up four pounds, while Haney would have needed to shed three pounds below the 147-pound welterweight division boundary. Haney declined the proposal, choosing not to weaken himself given his status as the welterweight titleholder with the larger fan following.
The stance on weight proved controversial. TalkSPORT reported that Stevenson had previously proposed facing Conor Benn at the full 147-pound limit in February, even offering to accept Benn’s chosen rehydration restrictions. That willingness to compromise made his strict catchweight demand for Haney difficult to frame as a basic safety precaution.
Still, the champion remains active as he prepares for his next assignment. Stevenson posted on X: “Date on the way ⏳,” signalling that an official fight confirmation is imminent.
Having won the WBO light welterweight title from Teofimo Lopez in January, Stevenson now faces a choice among four primary WBO contenders at 140 pounds: Emiliano Vargas, Lindolfo Delgado, Oscar Duarte, and Ernesto Mercado.
Vargas offers strong commercial value. At 22 years of age, the son of former world champion Fernando Vargas sits at No. 1 in the WBO rankings. However, Top Rank lists recent stoppages over Bryce Mills and Agustin Ezequiel Quintana as his leading achievements, highlighting his relative lack of world-level exposure.
Mercado presents a far greater tactical threat. Possessing superior hand speed and notable power, Mercado believes he has rattled the division leader. Speaking during an Inside The Ring interview, Mercado said: “I’m in his head. I live in his head. He don’t wanna fight me,” explicitly accusing Stevenson of avoiding a contest.
Stevenson has built a lucrative career featuring major appearances on Turki Alalshikh cards. Facing Vargas provides a marketable defense against an inexperienced challenger, whereas taking on Mercado would force Stevenson to defend his belt against his most dangerous available rival.
