The Cleveland Guardians have emerged as a serious American League postseason contender following a seven-game winning streak in late August. Fueled by trade deadline acquisitions and elite starting pitching, Cleveland is actively closing the gap on traditional league leaders.
While the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees continue to pace the American League, Cleveland’s midseason adjustments have transformed their lineup. The Guardians added outfield depth by acquiring Jo Adell alongside Nathaniel Lowe to boost overall run production. Former pitcher Dontrelle Willis highlighted the immediate return on those offensive moves during a recent FOX Sports appearance.
“The Cleveland Guardians, especially the adds they had on the offensive side. Love what I’ve seen from Jo Adell, playing with a lot of confidence, 18 RBIs in his last 15 ball games. Steven Kwan ‘s been an absolute monster since the All-Star break, hitting .385, that leads all of baseball,” Willis said.
That offense has found steady support from emerging young players. Willis added: “Chase DeLauter, the young rookie, the power has been up and down, but he’s hitting .377 over his last 15 ball games… You pair that with the rotation that is very solid.”
Pitching remains the operational core of manager Stephen Vogt’s club. Cleveland’s starting staff features strong foundational arms, supported in late innings by closer Cade Smith.
“You have (Gavin) Williams at the top of that rotation as well as (Parker) Messick, who I love watching that lefty because he throws the baseball and he attacks the strike zone with all three of his pitches,” Willis noted.
That tactical stability gives Cleveland genuine credibility as the pennant race intensifies. Willis emphasized the internal mindset driving the team: “Stephen Vogt always believes in this locker room. They don’t care where they are placed at as far as the betting odds or anything in Cleveland. They believe that they have a chance every single year to be able to win the World Series.”
With Jose Ramirez anchoring the order and Kwan sustaining high-contact metrics, Cleveland enters the final stretches of the regular season fully equipped for October.
