Filip Hrgovic claimed the vacant IBF heavyweight title by stopping Moses Itauma in the ninth round, recovering from an early knockdown. Ringside viewer Daniel Dubois praised the Croatian while emphasizing that Itauma requires time to rebuild following his first career defeat.
Hrgovic demonstrated considerable composure under early pressure in the contest. After being dropped in the second round, the Croatian adjusted his pacing as Itauma visibly fatigued in the mid-to-late rounds. By the ninth round, Hrgovic capitalized on his opponent’s exhaustion to force the stoppage and secure the world title.
Dubois, the current WBO heavyweight champion and the only fighter to have beaten Hrgovic, watched the contest from ringside. The Londoner previously earned an eighth-round stoppage win over Hrgovic in June 2024 due to cuts.
Speaking to Seconds Out after the fight, Dubois offered a straightforward assessment of the outcome.
“It’s boxing. The better man won. It was a good fight while it lasted. I knew Hrgovic had it in him. He’s a tough competitor.”
The result drastically alters the near-future plans for the heavyweight division. A high-profile unification bout between Dubois and Itauma had been heavily discussed for Wembley Stadium next year, but that prospective fixture is now sidelined. Itauma must now re-evaluate his approach after encountering the first major setback of his professional career.
Dubois emphasized the contrast in mindset between himself and his younger domestic peer.
“[I have a] different mindset, [I’m a total] total different animal. I wasn’t going to be denied. He’s not me. He can come again I suppose. Maybe rebuild I suppose. It tests his team out around him now. He’ll see who’s really with him.”
Dubois moves on to his next confirmed assignment. He will face Fabio Wardley in a rematch on October 17.
For Itauma, the immediate task involves assessing what went wrong once the fight went beyond the early rounds. Navigating a first stoppage loss tests both a fighter and their inner circle, leaving the young prospect focused on restructuring his route back into world title contention.
