Andy Ruiz Jr will headline against Damian Knyba on Friday, 4 September at Newark’s Prudential Center. The former heavyweight champion needs an emphatic victory to justify his contract with promoter Eddie Hearn and maintain his status as a serious contender.
Ruiz returns to the ring over 12 rounds broadcast live on DAZN and TNT, facing a significant physical challenge against the 6ft 7in Polish fighter. Knyba presents a clear distance test for the American, who must work inside the jab without simply pursuing his opponent around the canvas. While Ruiz retains fast hand speed, his footwork will dictate whether he can bridge the gap effectively. Reaching with single right hands will play into Knyba’s reach, whereas slipping the jab and throwing combinations inside would demonstrate coordinated movement. Knyba was previously stopped in three rounds by Agit Kabayel in January, setting a benchmark for Ruiz to establish early control.
This bout follows a draw against Jarrell Miller in August 2024, where Ruiz started well before his output slowed under sustained pressure. A hand injury reported during that contest highlighted ongoing questions regarding his capacity to sustain offensive output over 12 rounds. Now reunited with trainer Manny Robles, Ruiz has emphasized improved training camp discipline. Speaking in a promotional video, Ruiz pointed to flaws in his previous preparation: “Not like a lot of yes men that I had, you know, before,” he said. “That’s why I was doing my own thing. One foot in, one foot out.”
Friday marks four years since Ruiz last secured a victory, when he defeated Luis Ortiz in September 2022. Inactivity remains his greatest impediment. Having boxed just four times since defeating Anthony Joshua in June 2019, the 36-year-old has minimal space left for a gradual rebuild. Hearn requires a reliable heavyweight who can quickly secure major bouts rather than entering another extended absence. A performance against Knyba keeps his comeback viable, but long-term success depends entirely on his willingness to stay active in the division.
