AC Milan has maintained interest in Lecce defender Tiago Gabriel following an unfulfilled summer pursuit, with the Rossoneri considering a January transfer move. The Portuguese centre-back scored in Lecce’s recent 3-2 victory over Monza, pushing the Salento side to 12th.
Gabriel scored via a header from an inventive corner sequence by Ilic against Monza, highlighting his aerial presence alongside defensive control. His defensive metrics in Serie A feature two tackles won per game, 0.8 interceptions, 1.5 ball recoveries, and 3.8 defensive closures. He has conceded only 0.5 dribbles per game and registered zero errors leading to opposition goals. His ability to operate comfortably as both a central and wide centre-back fits Ruben Amorim’s preference for a three-man defensive system.
Lecce sporting director Trinchera confirmed Milan approached the club late in the transfer window with an offer totalling €20m. Lecce rejected the proposal, choosing to retain their defensive anchor. Trinchera stated: “The conditions weren’t right to conclude a deal that would be advantageous for the club. We’re a solid club that can afford the luxury of not selling a key player. I spoke with him and yesterday with Jorge Mendes. Both parties are fully committed.”
The sporting director emphasized that Gabriel accepted the decision professionally while agent Jorge Mendes remains engaged in discussions.
Trinchera expanded on the negotiation status: “We agreed to discuss the contract at the end of the transfer window if he had stayed. He had the opportunity to join a big club that would change his life, but this wasn’t the right time. Now we’re back on track. We need to fight with the right spirit, and Tiago will be a key player.”
Lecce is preparing to activate an automatic contract renewal clause, which would extend Gabriel’s contract until 2029. This structural move strengthens Lecce’s negotiating stance ahead of the January transfer window. Lecce has no intention of granting discounts, and a deal under €30m is considered unlikely.
