The WBC has promoted interim cruiserweight champion Michal Cieslak to full champion and sanctioned his first title defense against David Benavidez on 12 December in Phoenix. The winner will be obligated to face Ring Magazine champion Jai Opetaia next.
The sanctioning body’s ruling clears up recent disruption at the top of the 200-pound weight class. Noel Mikaelian lost his WBC title outside the ring after the organisation declared the belt vacant. That decision allowed Cieslak (28-2, 22 KOs) to be elevated to full champion. The 37-year-old Polish puncher has rebuilt his standing by stringing together seven consecutive victories since his 2021 world title defeat against Lawrence Okolie.
Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) enters the December matchup holding both the WBA and WBO titles, having previously outpointed Gilberto Ramirez. The Phoenix date gives the unbeaten American a home crowd as he targets a third belt at cruiserweight.
Still, overlooking Cieslak would be a significant error. With 22 knockouts on his resume, the Polish challenger carries power capable of disrupting major unification fixtures.
Opetaia (31-0, 24 KOs) earned his mandatory position by stopping Mikaelian in the ninth round at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, the Australian left Nevada without the green belt because the WBC refused to sanction his fight as an official championship contest.
Outlining the official mandatory succession, the WBC stated: “The winner of that bout must face next Jai Opetaia, who won his bout last Saturday, September 12, in Las Vegas, Nevada,”
This administrative ruling establishes a clear structure for undisputed honours at 200 pounds. A Benavidez victory in December removes any remaining red tape, setting up the defining contest of the division against Opetaia. Until then, Opetaia must watch from ringside while Cieslak and Benavidez headline in Arizona.
