The Sharks prepare for the 2026-27 United Rugby Championship season under head coach JP Pietersen following a 10th-place finish last term. Pietersen has restructured his squad with senior international returns and emerging youth ahead of their opening fixture against Ospreys.
Pietersen took over from John Plumtree last December with Durban languishing in 14th place after securing just one win from six matches. Permanent appointment followed in February after consecutive victories against the Stormers. Although the Sharks missed the play-offs, tactical improvements were visible as Pietersen integrated academy talent into senior set-pieces. Eighteen-year-old Zekhethelo Siyaya demonstrated versatility at fullback and flyhalf, earning South Africa A selection before injury halted his progress. Siyaya now steps up to cover fullback during Aphelele Fassi’s sabbatical in Japan.
Significant squad turnover reshapes the roster for the upcoming campaign. High-profile departures include Springbok flanker Siya Kolisi to the Stormers, scrumhalf Grant Williams to Kobelco Steelers, and center Lukhanyo Am to Sagamihara Dynaboars. To rebuild squad depth, the Sharks signed prop Thomas du Toit from Bath, lock Stephan Lewies from Harlequins, and scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl from Saracens. Winger Suleiman Hartzenberg joins on loan from the Stormers, while 44-year-old former All Black Ma’a Nonu arrives in a mentorship role.
At the end of last season, Pietersen described the balance of his squad under the captaincy of Springbok centre André Esterhuizen as “beautiful” and said he was confident that, after a proper pre-season, they would begin the 2026-27 URC campaign in a “better place”.
The Durban side opens with consecutive home matches at Kings Park against Ospreys on 26 September and Leinster on 3 October. A derby away match against the Stormers in Cape Town on 10 October provides an early test of lineout dominance and breakdown efficiency. Establishing set-piece stability during this initial home run remains vital if the Sharks are to secure top-eight placement and return to Champions Cup qualification contention.
