Before his role as a benefactor to Trump Jr. was revealed, the Russian oligarch was known as a controversial figure in amateur boxing.

Russian oligarch and International Boxing Association president Umar Kremlev reportedly financed extensive post-wedding celebrations for Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas. The six-figure expenses covered private island rental fees and fireworks, which Anderson described as a generous wedding gift from a friend. In response, House Democrats led by Representative Robert Garcia announced plans to launch an oversight investigation into the financial ties.
Kremlev has long drawn international scrutiny due to his close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and controversial leadership of the IBA. Under Kremlev, the IBA lost its International Olympic Committee recognition following governance issues and controversies surrounding eligibility testing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The boxing organization has subsequently sought alignment with the Trump administration on policies concerning women's sports.
