On September 18, 1999, Felix Trinidad defeated Oscar De La Hoya via a majority decision in their welterweight unification fight at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. De La Hoya controlled the first nine rounds with his jab and movement, but he surrendered the closing rounds after receiving advice from his corner to retreat and minimize exchanges.
Trinidad outlanded De La Hoya 64-33 over the final three rounds to secure the victory, unifying the WBC and IBF titles. Despite De La Hoya landing 263 punches compared to Trinidad's 166, judges Jerry Roth and Bob Logist scored the bout in favor of Trinidad, while Glen Hamada scored it a draw.
