Earlier today, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski said a decision on the team’s starting quarterback would be made in short order. Atlanta’s setup atop the depth chart is indeed now known.
The Atlanta Falcons have named Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback for Week 3. Head coach Kevin Stefanski finalized the decision following a 34-3 loss to Carolina, where backup Cooper Rush struggled and was intercepted twice. Penix is returning to action after recovering from a partially torn ACL.
Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees noted that Penix has looked sharp and confident during his recovery. Meanwhile, fellow quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains sidelined with a back injury, though he is reportedly making progress. Penix's 2026 debut will occur as the Falcons begin a stretch of three consecutive primetime games.
