Jones took a perfect game bid into the sixth inning before Cardinals rookie Nathan Church broke it up with a one-out double down the third-base line, which stood as St. Louis's only offensive threat against him across seven innings.
Cardinals starter Andre Pallante delivered a strong performance despite taking the loss, pitching six innings and allowing just one run on three hits. Pallante escaped multiple jams, including a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning, before Ryan O'Hearn drove in Pittsburgh's first run with a sixth-inning ground ball.
