Gene Tunney defeated Jack Dempsey by unanimous decision over ten rounds to capture the heavyweight championship on September 23, 1926. The bout took place in the rain at Sesquicentennial Stadium in Philadelphia. Tunney relied on movement and straight punches to counter Dempsey, who had not defended the title since his 1923 knockout of Luis Firpo.
Despite a slippery canvas caused by the weather, Tunney consistently disrupted Dempsey's rushes and targeted his head and body. By the final round, Dempsey suffered from a badly swollen left eye. Referee Tommy Reilly and judges Mike Bernstein and Frank Brown awarded Tunney a clear decision.
